BLACK HISTORY MONTH POSTER CONTEST WINNERS RECEIVE FREE TUITION

The winners of the Black History Month Fifth-Grade Poster Contest were announced during a reception Friday night at the University of Houston-Victoria.

Winning first prize, which included two years of tuition at UHV and two years at The Victoria College, was Yazen Hamoudah, a student at Schorlemmer Elementary School. He did a poster on a variety of famous African-American firsts, inventors and politicians.

Samantha Beck, a student at DeLeon Elementary School, won second place for her poster on Mary McLeod Bethune, an educator, author and political activist. She won a year of free tuition from VC and UHV.

Devin Smiga of Smith Magnet Elementary School won third place for his poster about Blanche Kelso Bruce, who was the first African-American elected to a full term in the U.S. Senate in 1874. Smiga won one free semester from VC and UHV.

Winners of honorable mention awards and their schools are as follows: Stephanie Skoruppa, Chandler Elementary; Danielle Hasjar, Chandler Elementary; Matthew Parsons, Vickers Elementary; and Ashley Bowland, Mission Valley Elementary.

The four students received prize bags from UHV and the Cultural Council of Victoria.

A total of 155 students submitted posters on the theme of African-Americans in Politics. The posters were then judged by a panel of community members on creative use of the theme, neatness, impact and accuracy of the information.

All posters submitted to the contest are on public display in the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St., throughout February during regular business hours.

UHV helps organize Black History Month events annually along with The Victoria College, Cultural Council of Victoria and the Black History Month Steering Committee.
