A prospective student looks over financial aid materials during a Jaguar Day in November 2014. Three Jaguar Days are planned this school year: Nov. 14, Jan. 30 and Feb. 27.

The University of Houston-Victoria will open its doors Nov. 14 to all prospective students wanting a firsthand look at the university.

UHV is hosting the first of three Jaguar Days from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Prospective freshmen, transfer students and graduate students can come and go at any point during the day. Check-in will take place at Jaguar Hall, 2705 Houston Highway.

Jaguar Days are open houses that allow visitors to get a better feel for what makes UHV unique. Attendees can tour campus, meet with admissions staff and consult faculty members about instruction and degree programs.

Billy Lagal, UHV director of admissions and student recruitment, said Jaguar Days provides prospective students and their families a chance to get all their questions answered in one place at one time.

“In some instances, prospective students have a general idea of how to go about getting into college, but they don’t always know the specific steps regarding admission, enrollment, financial aid or housing,” Lagal said. “That’s one reason Jaguar Days have been successful. They provide clear answers from people who directly work with students.”

Lagal said prospective students often have questions about majors and what they can do with that major after graduation.

“They can ask faculty members these questions at Jaguar Days and get information from the people who know best about careers in those disciplines,” he said.

Participants also can learn about student life activities, athletics programs, student jobs and internships, and student support offerings, including tutoring and success coach mentoring. Lunch is provided at Jaguar Hall Dining.

jaX the Jaguar will be on hand to welcome prospective students. There also will be a UHV shop to purchase Jaguar apparel.

A residence hall tour will showcase the rooms, fitness areas, student lounges, kitchens and computer labs. Participants also can ride the UHV shuttle buses to visit the rest of campus. To become more familiar with Victoria, shuttle tours of the city will be offered at 10:45 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

“There’s no substitute for seeing the campus,” Lagal said. “It’s more than just opening up a pamphlet. You want to be able to walk on the campus and see facilities firsthand.”

Two additional Jaguar Days are planned on Jan. 30 and Feb. 27.
